WHAT IS BINOCULAR VISION DYSFUNCTION?

Binocular Vision Dysfunction (BVD) is a condition characterized by a mismatch or impairment in the coordination and alignment of the eyes, or alignment of the vision with the body. This impairment typically takes place in the brain and affects the eyes and vision, leading to visual discomfort and various visual disturbances. Binocular vision refers to the ability of both eyes to work together as a team, providing a single, clear, and three-dimensional visual perception of the world. Occasionally BVD is caused by a physically faulty eye muscle.

In individuals with Binocular Vision Dysfunction, there is a disruption in the binocular visual system, which can occur due to several reasons, including muscle imbalances, misalignment of the eyes, or a problem with the brain's ability to process visual information. There are many different types of BVD and this condition can be present from birth or acquired later in life due to trauma, illness, or neurological disorders.

How is Binocular Vision Dysfunction (BVD) Diagnosed

NuroVision Therapy

Diagnosis of Binocular Vision Dysfunction (BVD) typically involves an in-depth functional vision assessment by an optometrist with a special interest in vision therapy or neuro optometry, like our team here at NeuroVision Clinic. The assessment may include testing eye alignment, focusing abilities, eye teaming, peripheral vision integration, depth perception, the coordination of eye movements, and the alignment of the vision with the body.

Treatment for Binocular Vision Dysfunction aims to alleviate symptoms and improve the coordination between the eyes and brain. It may involve the use of specialized lenses, prisms, or vision therapy exercises to retrain the visual system and enhance binocular vision. Many optometrists, ophthalmologists, neurologists, and other healthcare professionals refer their patients to NeuroVision Clinic to address these underlying neurological causes of the binocular vision dysfunction.

It's important to consult with a qualified eye care professional, like at NeuroVision Clinic, who has specialized training in Binocular Vision Dysfunction and vision therapy, for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management, as the symptoms of BVD can overlap with other conditions or visual disorders.

Common Symptoms of Binocular Vision Dysfunction (BVD)

“Before wearing the glasses I had a lot of mental fatigue and struggles with getting tasks done. On top of this I dealt with light sensitivity and issues reading. After wearing the glasses most of my symptoms have resolved and I continue to feel better every day! Thank you.” - Josh
